Only Alan is looking forward to seeing flashy Mick, widower of Jean, whose funeral everyone is attending, and who arrives from Spain with a 30-year-old wife.

Joyce organizes a 40th wedding anniversary party for Carol and Trevor. Prior to setting out to the restaurant Carol confesses to Maureen and Joyce that she plans on leaving Trevor.

Thurnemouth Day is a celebrated day. Trevor will be master of ceremonies while Joyce attempts to get Carol into the choir. Alan finds himself knee-deep in a project.

Joyce is retiring from her career, and Alan has taken the time to throw her a party. However, sudden news of their poor financial situation changes her plans.

Maureen decides to move her mother into nursing home, but her sister Pauline disagrees with the idea. Joyce also has a mind to change residences.
